Calm the Communication Chaos

Back in my day (insert generation challenge here). We all heard this growing up from our parents or grandparents and (gasp) most of us have used the term talking to the younger generations. It’s no secret that technology has come a long way and continues to make leaps and bounds every generation, but have our communication styles evolved without taking into consideration that many peoples have not?

According to the Harvard Business Review demographic change is a profoundly important issue in today’s organizations, yet it’s not given the time to properly understand its ramifications. People over the age of 65 are remaining in the workplace rather than retiring, and fewer younger workers are entering into certain workforce roles. It’s imperative that organizations find a way to bridge the intergenerational communication gap, not only amongst their employees but with their potential customers as well.

Communication preferences vary a great deal between the older and younger generations, simply because each generation learned to communicate with the tools and technology available when their communication style was being formed. Most people stick with what they know, like the old saying “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” As the younger generations start to move up in organizations, it’s important to avoid alienating their predecessors, especially since they hold the key to the continued success of the new generation.

Collaboration between differing generations is essential to promote growth and ensure effective communication across the board. Here are some pros and cons of each communication style:
